Silent Night

This popular German carol, depicting the quiet nativity scene and the angels’ announcement to the shepherds, has a soothing melody that works well on the Native American flute. It's hard to get through the Christmas season without hearing a rendition time-honored holiday favorite.

I Saw Three Ships

The earliest printed version of this traditional English carol dates from the 17th century. The carol’s simple lyrics lead many to believe it was intended primarily for children. This upbeat and cheerful tune is fun to play on the Native American flute.

The Holly and the Ivy

This traditional carol could well be over a thousand years old. It’s lyrics use each part of the holly tree to remind singers of the true meaning in the Christmas story. The melody is not a difficult one to master on the Native American flute.

Of the Father's Love Begotten

The fifthe century lyrics of this song were originally written in Latin by Aurelius Clemens Prudentius. The words were translated in the 1800s and paired with a free-flowing chant-like melody that sounds fantastic on the Native American flute.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

These fourth century lyrics were set to a haunting melody thirteen centuries later in France. This is another Christmas carol whose unmeasured melody is reminiscent of an ancient chant. Native American flute players can have fun experimenting with their own rhythm and phrasing for this free-flowing holiday tune.

Once flute players have mastered these five Christmas songs, they might want to check out tabs and sound files for five more carols including Away in a Manger, What Child Is This?, The First Noel, Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella, and The Coventry Carol.
